Verified Crime Data

When choosing between the safest cities in the UK for solo female travel, the difference isn't just about overall crime figures — it's about night safety, hotel district security, and infrastructure designed for women travelling alone. Some UK cities that look safe on paper have very specific danger zones. Others that sound risky have exceptional hotel districts. We used data to find out which is which.

Every city in this ranking was scored using rolling 12-month crime statistics from the Police.uk API — the same source that powers live safety scores on SafeHotels.ai hotel listings. We weighted crime categories by severity, normalised per 1,000 residents, and layered community night safety ratings from verified solo female stays on top.

Our methodology: Scores combine Police.uk crime rates (weighted by severity, normalised per 1,000 residents), night-time ratings from verified solo female community reviews, and walkability scores for each city's primary hotel district. Updated weekly. Higher is safer.

Edinburgh ★ Solo Female Approved Top Ranked
Scotland · EH1–EH3
Night Safety: 9.1/10
Street Safety: Excellent
Transport: Excellent

Edinburgh tops our ranking of the safest cities in the UK for solo female travellers — and it isn't close. The New Town and Old Town record some of the lowest violent crime rates of any UK city centre. Well-lit cobbled streets, a visible year-round police presence, and a concentrated hotel district mean solo female travellers rarely need to navigate unfamiliar, low-footfall areas after dark. Our community reviewers rate Edinburgh 9.1 for night safety — the highest of any UK city on our platform. The tram from the airport drops you directly onto Princes Street, and the compact geography keeps late-night walks short and well-populated.

York ★ Solo Female Approved
North Yorkshire · YO1
Night Safety: High
Walkability: Excellent
Hotel District: Very Safe

York's walled city centre is one of the safest environments for solo female travellers in all of England. North Yorkshire Police data consistently ranks among the lowest crime rates of any UK force. The historic core is compact, extremely walkable, and well-lit — hotels within the city walls benefit from a geometry that keeps visibility and footfall high until late. Solo female reviewers specifically call out the comfort of walking back to their hotel at midnight in York — a feeling that is nearly unique among English cities of this size and one that earns it a strong second place among the safest UK cities.

Bath ★ Solo Female Approved
Somerset · BA1–BA2
Night Safety: High
Cleanliness: 8.8/10
Street Lighting: Very Good

Bath's UNESCO World Heritage status reflects something beyond its Georgian architecture — it's a well-maintained, well-policed city that takes its public realm seriously. Avon and Somerset Police data shows comparatively low rates of street crime and anti-social behaviour in the city centre. The hotel district around Milsom Street and the Roman Baths is exceptionally well-lit and well-populated until late. Our community data gives Bath 8.8 for area cleanliness — a metric that correlates strongly with solo female safety perception, and one of Bath's defining strengths as a travel destination.

Cambridge ★ Solo Female Approved
Cambridgeshire · CB1–CB2
Night Safety: Good
Street Safety: Very Good
Active Streets: High

Cambridge benefits from a year-round student and academic population that keeps streets active and relatively safe around the clock. Cambridgeshire Police data shows low violent crime in the CB1 and CB2 postcodes that host most of the city's hotels. King's Parade, Jesus Lane, and the area around the train station all register strong safety scores. For solo female business travellers visiting the tech and biotech cluster, Cambridge is a particularly strong choice — extremely walkable, cyclable, and requiring minimal late-night navigation to reach the main hotel district.

7.5
Safety
Bristol
Bristol · BS1 · BS6 · BS8
Clifton (BS8): Excellent
Harbourside (BS1): Good
Postcode Variance: High

Bristol makes the top five in our safest cities UK ranking with an important caveat: postcode matters enormously here. Clifton (BS8) and Harbourside (BS1) are two of the safest hotel districts in England — well-lit, resident-heavy, and consistently low-crime. Some other Bristol postcodes — particularly around Stokes Croft in BS2 — score significantly lower. Use SafeHotels.ai's postcode filter to find hotels in BS1, BS6, or BS8 for consistently strong safety scores. Solo female reviewers who stayed in these specific areas rate Bristol very highly and the harbour area is genuinely one of the most pleasant evening environments of any UK city.

Oxford
Oxfordshire · OX1–OX4
Old Town (OX1): High
Jericho: Excellent
Station Area: Moderate

Oxford earns a solid #6 in our safest cities UK ranking. The hotel district around Broad Street and the Bodleian consistently records very low theft and street crime — OX1 is one of the better-performing inner-city postcodes in England. Jericho and North Oxford bring down the anti-social behaviour average significantly compared to other student cities. Solo female reviewers give Oxford 7.6 for night safety — strong, with the consistent caveat that the area immediately around Oxford Station scores lower and is best avoided for late-night walks back to your hotel.

Exeter
Devon · EX1–EX4
City Centre: Very Safe
Cleanliness: High
Night Safety: Good

Exeter is the most underrated entry in our safest cities UK list — and one of the most pleasant surprises for solo female travellers. Devon and Cornwall Police record comparatively low crime across all categories in EX1. The cathedral quarter, which anchors the hotel district, is well-maintained, well-lit, and busy with university students into the early hours. For solo female business travellers visiting the Met Office, Exeter Science Park, or the growing professional services sector, the city delivers a consistently safe, manageable experience with direct trains from London in under two hours.

Leeds city centre streets and modern architecture in West Yorkshire, England

Safety
Leeds
West Yorkshire · LS1–LS2
Financial District: Good
Night Safety: Moderate
Transport: Excellent

Leeds earns its spot in the top 10 safest cities UK ranking through strong business hotel districts and exceptional transport links, with clear caveats around the weekend nightlife zones. The financial district around Leeds Station and the Headrow records moderate-to-good safety scores. However, parts of the entertainment district around Call Lane register higher anti-social behaviour in West Yorkshire Police data. For solo female business travellers and weekday visitors, Leeds scores well. The main risk is concentrated in specific bar-strip areas on Friday and Saturday nights — a pattern that doesn't affect most professional solo travellers.

Safety
Newcastle upon Tyne
Tyne & Wear · NE1–NE4
Quayside: Good
Jesmond: 8.0+
Weekend Nights: Elevated

Newcastle is a genuinely welcoming city for solo female travellers during the day and early evening — the Quayside and Grainger Town areas offer good safety profiles and strong hotel options. The city's celebrated nightlife scene is also its main consideration: Northumbria Police data shows elevated assault and anti-social behaviour in NE1 areas around the Bigg Market on weekend nights. Choose Quayside or Jesmond postcodes and Newcastle becomes a much stronger proposition. Jesmond — a residential suburb with direct Metro to the city — consistently scores above 8.0 on our night safety index and is our strongest recommendation for solo female stays here.

Safety
Manchester
Greater Manchester · M3 · M15
Spinningfields (M3): 8.5+
Castlefield (M15): 8.5+
Piccadilly: Avoid

Manchester's position at #10 in our safest cities UK list reflects significant postcode variance — the city's worst areas score very poorly, while its best rival Edinburgh for hotel district safety. Spinningfields (M3) and Castlefield (M15) consistently score 8.5+ and are our top recommendations for solo female travellers. Ancoats (M4) has transformed and performs well too. Piccadilly Gardens and the surrounding area score among the lowest in our entire UK index — avoid overnight stays there. Use SafeHotels.ai's postcode filter to search M3 and M15 specifically — a filtered search reveals safety scores comparable to Bath or Cambridge. Read our full Manchester safety guide →

Cities That Didn't Make Our Safest Cities UK List

Some of the UK's biggest cities don't appear in our top 10 safest cities ranking for solo female travel. London is too large and varied to rank as a single city — some London postcodes outscore Edinburgh, while others sit near the bottom of our entire UK index. Our dedicated London solo female guide covers the 12 safest postcode areas. Birmingham city centre records higher theft and anti-social behaviour in West Midlands Police data than any city in our top 10, though Brindleyplace and the Jewellery Quarter have improved noticeably. Glasgow has transformed significantly but city-wide data still reflects higher violence rates than Edinburgh, and it doesn't yet meet our top-ten threshold for safest UK cities.

Note on London: A single London safety ranking would be misleading. Parts of Central London outscore Edinburgh on our index. Our London guide provides postcode-level rankings and hotel recommendations specifically for solo female travellers.

Solo Female Safety Tips for UK Cities

🔍
Always Check the Postcode

Every hotel on SafeHotels.ai shows live Police.uk crime data for its exact postcode. Two hotels in the same safest cities UK ranking can have vastly different postcode-level scores. Always verify before booking.

🌙
Night Safety Overrides the Overall Score

An area with low daytime crime can still have elevated anti-social behaviour after dark. Our Night Safety ratings come exclusively from verified solo female community reviews — not aggregate statistics that include daytime figures.

🚆
Late Transport = Safer Return

Edinburgh's night buses, York's walkable walled centre, and Manchester's Metrolink all scored highly in community transport safety reviews. Prioritise hotels within safe walking distance of reliable late-night transport options.

Filter for Solo Female Reviews

A hotel with five booking-site stars may score poorly on our solo female night safety rating. Verified stays from solo women tell a very different story to family or couple reviews — filter for them on SafeHotels.ai for more relevant results.

📍
Hotel District vs. City Average

Our rankings score each city's primary hotel district, not city-wide averages. Newcastle with elevated citywide crime still has Quayside hotels scoring 7.5+. The city ranking is the starting point — the postcode is the final answer.

🗓
Events Change the Safety Picture

Edinburgh in August (Fringe), York during race weekends, and Bath's Christmas Markets all see elevated crowd-related incidents. Check whether major events coincide with your dates — both Police.uk data and our community scores shift seasonally.

How We Score the Safest Cities in the UK

Our city safety scores combine four components. Crime Rate draws on rolling 12-month Police.uk data, weighted by category severity and normalised per 1,000 residents so larger cities aren't unfairly penalised for population size. Night Safety uses community ratings collected exclusively from verified solo female stays. Hotel District Security scores the specific postcode where most of a city's hotels are located — not the citywide average, which can be heavily distorted by outlying areas. Walkability covers pedestrian infrastructure and street lighting quality. All scores update weekly as new Police.uk monthly data is published.

This means a hotel in our #3 city can still show a poor safety score if it's in the wrong postcode — and a hotel in #9 Newcastle can score above 8.0 in the right area. For solo female travellers, the city ranking is your shortlist. Postcode is always the final word.
